Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
Our bodies are incredibly intelligent and like everything else in the universe are composed of energy. As with acupuncture, tapping utilises the body’s energy meridians or chi.
By tapping gently with your fingers on end points of these meridians you can tap into your own healing power.
Culturally we are taught to suppress strong emotions, we “push them down” in order to “get on with it”. As we “stuff down” our emotions we begin to manifest emotional and physical symptoms in a feedback loop.
This emotional distress, or pain can be thought of, or felt as stuck energy in our bodies.
As we tap, we send a comforting pulse through our energy system, tapping or shaking away the stuck or blocked energy. The act of tapping sends a calming signal to the amygdala, the part of our brain that harbours our flight, fight or freeze response, reducing our cortisol (stress hormone) levels.
One randomised controlled trial compared an hour-long EFT session with an hour of talk therapy (CBT). It found that anxiety and depression dropped twice as much with EFT and that cortisol declined by 24% in just a single hour, with some participant’s levels declining by 50% (Church, Yount & Brooks, 2012).
EFT Tapping is gentle and easy to learn, allowing you to use it whenever a situation arises or between sessions. You don’t even have to “believe” in it for it to work. Tapping literally puts the power to change your perspective and life into your own hands.
